When we were together, you used to let me make my own decisions, you trusted me. After all this, at least that hasn’t changed.
You guys who are getting angry at Stefan for saving Matt, look at Elena’s face. Stefan tried to take her. But she wouldnt let him. And he wasn’t going to just ignore what she truly wanted. Imagine if he pulled her up, kicking and screaming, while Matt drowned. Imagine her devastation, her anger at Stefan. It wouldn’t have been right for Stefan to do anything else. It’s just, my heart bleeds for him. Thinking he could get them both out in time. Julie didnt show us but Stefan went back, he pulled her up from the water, he tried to resuscitate her. He believed he had failed. He thought the love of his life had died. He was broken. How dare you accuse him of killing her? Stefan Salvatore has never needed anyone to blame him. His own conscience hurts him enough.
People simply don’t understand. It’s like they haven’t listened to Elena throughout this season. When she was desperately trying to save everyone. When she was putting her own life on the line. When she was countless times saying she can’t loose anymore people she loves. But Stefan, he heard her. The thing is, if Stefan saved Elena instead of Matt, she wouldn’t only hate him, she would hate himself. She would always blame herself for leaving him down there, because the reason they were in that car is because he was trying to save her. Because he was trying to get her to safety. And that’s the risk Stefan wasn’t willing to take. He wasn’t willing to take her by force, making her blame herself for Matt’s death. He had put her wishes in front of his own, and the only person to blame now is him. And for her, he is ready to carry that burden. Two years ago, he gave her father a choice. And now, he did the same with her. But that’s the curse of a hero. Doing a noble thing always has a price.
